Vision Statement
It is the vision of the Community Policing Unit to lead the efforts of the Police Department in the transition from Traditional Policing to Community Oriented Policing, and develop programs that will form partnerships with the community and assist in the developing of a department wide Strategic Plan to solve problems.
Ewing Township's Community Policing Unit offers several programs and services aimed at making our neighborhoods and businesses safe and secure. If you have any questions regarding the following programs, please call the C.P.U. at 882-1313 extension 5578.
Neighborhood Watch Program
Ewing Township has many active Neighborhood Watch programs through the town. Most designated Watch areas range from 10 to 50 homes, depending upon the neighborhood. These organized group's work together with the Police Department in order to provide optimized protection for their local area. Interested in finding out if your neighborhood is part of this program?… Or, better yet, interested in organizing a new Watch? Contact the Community Policing Unit today!
Home Security Surveys
One of the primary components of the Neighborhood Watch Program is making sure that all homes in the designated area are secure. Our Community Policing Unit officers will inspect your home, inside and out, and recommend any improvements. Special attention is given to locks, lighting and landscape design. Home security surveys are available to ALL residents. Call the C.P.U. to arrange a free Security Survey for your home.
Operation Identification
Studies indicate that valuables, which can be easily identified, are least attractive to thieves. We encourage you to take a full inventory of all the valuables in your home. Many people do this once and forget about it. What's the date on your list? Have you bought a new computer, TV, camera or bicycle? If the answer is yes, take time to update your inventory. The next step is marking your valuables for easy identification. The best ID is your driver's license number. If your belongings are found, any police officer can track them with your DL# 24 hours a day. Need to borrow an engraver? We lend them free of charge!
Emergency Services Registration
All residents and businesses that have alarm systems are required to register them with the Police Department (local ordinance #8-96). All information provided in the Emergency Services Registration is confidential and is not a public record. You can print the application here and send it in or pick one up at the municipal building.
Bicycle Safety
Helmets are the law in New Jersey for any child under 14 years old (NJSA 39:4-10.). In order to protect your children and your property, Ewing Township also offers a bicycle registration and safety inspection program. Call the C.P.U. for details. Applications for the bicycle registration are available at Police Headquarters. Children who ride their bikes to school should know by heart all roadway safety procedures and have an adult plan their riding route. They will also need a lock to secure their bike at school.
Guest Speakers
Interested in learning more about crime prevention or other police services? One of the best ways is to invite one of our Officers to speak to your group. Officers will tailor their presentation to meet your group's needs and answer any questions you have. You can also arrange a group tour of our police headquarters at Town Hall (especially interesting to kids). Contact us for details and scheduling (882-1313 extension 7532).
Gun Safety Program
The Ewing Township Police are offering free gun locks to promote the safe storage of guns in the home (New Jersey Law 2C:58-15). This program is open to residents of Ewing Township who own registered firearms (If you own a firearm that is not registered you can voluntarily register that firearm at the Police Department). Once the application is completed, a member of the Community Policing Unit will contact you to receive your free lock with proper instructions.

The Ewing Township Police Department in conjunction with the Ewing Schools participate in the highly acclaimed D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs or violence. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teach children in the grade school level how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug-and-violence-free lives.
